GVN Quick Pick Round 4!

It's been a long time since I have done one of these. So here are two games I think you should definitely check out. I am not going to limit it to one system like I have in the past with each Quick Pick. Let's Begin.

Implosion: Never Lose Hope
Nintendo Switch

Implosion is a hack 'n' slash action game that was ported from iOS and Android systems.  The gist of the game is that humanity had escaped to the stars after the XADA came out of nowhere and nearly wiped them out.  Now humanity uses War-mechs to take on the XADA and ensure the survival of the human race.  Implosion is a very simplistic action game with two attack buttons and special attacks that can be registered to an assigned button.  You even have a dodge that allows you to evade some nasty attacks.  Combat and controls are relatively smooth for the most part.  There are times when you might get stuck in an attack animation and cant dodge a crushing boss attack.

Hubbs' Top 10 Nintendo 64 Games - Happy 20th Anniversary

The Nintendo 64 is a system that comes with tons of nostalgic value.  Alongside the Sony Playstation, it signified the era of 3D gaming as something to be taking seriously as new avenues of possibilities opened up.  of course, the N64 was also the first time they took a back seat to their competitors in the consoles war, losing to brief console making partner, Sony.

Nintendo took a lot of risks with the N64, sticking with game cartridges over CDs, introducing the analog stick, and an expansion pack for improved memory.  Some worked out like the analog stick, which introduced precise control in a 3D environment, and even the rumble pack for force feedback while gaming.  Of course some things didn't work out. Nintendo's refusal to change formats meant that game cartridges cost a lot and took even longer to make.  Also many 3rd party companies like SquareSoft, left Nintendo's side and made games exclusively for competitor, Sony.  In turn this hurt sales of the system and the number of games released for it.

However, the N64 still continued Nintendo's push of quality over quantity providing some of the most memorable games ever during the 32/64bit era of the mid to late 90's.  Here are my personal top 10 Nintendo 64 games.

GVN Opinion: Mega Man 4 - Best of the classic blue bomber series.

Minor Spoiler Warning. Some story elements are revealed.

The Mega Man franchise has pretty much hit a brick wall after the release of the Mega Man 10.  Capcom has pretty much regulated Mega Man as a guest characters for other games and saw fit to cancel a sequel to Legends series.  Keiji Inafune, Mega Man's creator, has left Capcom and is set to release his new Mega Man-esque game, Mighty No. 9.  These are dark times for the blue bomber whom Capcom has pretty much shelved at this point.  Mega Man has become nothing more than a nostalgia piece that gets pulled out once in awhile to make the fans happy.

Protector's Top 10 Games!

I know it is only August and you are probably wondering why I am doing a Top 10 list in the middle of the year.  I have had many conversations with new gamers and veteran gamers about games we just love.  It doesn't matter if you have played the game a million times or one time.  There is something about it that just stays with you forever and you will never forget it.  That is why I came up with this list of 10 games and some honorable mentions that are my favorite games of all time.  These games of imprinted a memory in me that will never go away.  I hope that those reading this will give these games a chance especially if you have never played them.  Now, in the voice of Mario, "Here We Go!"

Update on TheProtector!

Hello everybody,

It has been a while since I have posted anything on the site and I just wanted to give an update on why and what I have plans for in the future for my GVN posts.  First off the main reason I haven't been posting much is because I am back in school finishing up my bachelors degree.  A lot of my focus has been on school and completing my classwork.  I have been able to finally find a balance between work and play so I have finally had time to play some video games.

The votes are in. Star Trek Month begins next week.

After a good vote during the last GVN Soul Saturday stream plus combined votes from Facebook, here are the top 4 voted games.

Star Trek - NES
Star Fleet Academy
Star Trek Armada*
Star Trek 25th Anniversary

* Edit * Because of graphical issues, I had to swap out Armada with another game. I can't properly review a 10+ year old game if it's barely playable on modern PCs.

The review and stream schedule will go as follows:

Star Trek 25th Anniversary (PC) - Review Feb 4th / Live Stream Feb 5th

Star Fleet Academy (32X) - Review Feb 11th / Live Stream Feb 12th

Star Trek TNG (Sega Genesis) - Review Feb 18th / Live Stream Feb 19th

Star Trek (NES) - Review Feb 25th / Live Stream Feb 26th

Thank you for the votes and I can't wait to relive these wonderful games.

Super Smash Bros. 3D on 3DS Preview

Here comes a new Challenger!  Yes the demo for Super Smash Bros. 3D is out on the 3DS and I was able to get some early access on it last week and I must say that I am obsessed.  As a fan of the series since the first Super Smash Bros. on N64 I had quite a few expectations for the new game on my favorite handheld of all time.  While playing I wanted to take a close look at the playable characters in the demo, the controls, the graphics, the soundtrack, and the layout of the menus.  I was extremely satisfied with a lot of these and I will explain more about it.

Nintendo "Amiibo"

Alright gamers, we heard about the Amiibo figures back at E3 in June and finally you can pre-order them at your local Gamestop or online at Gamestop.com.  The initial release of Amiibo figures will be 12 in total and will cost $12.99 each.  Currently we know that the Amiibo's will work on both the WiiU and the 3DS for certain games and the first game to take advantage of them will be Super Smash Bros. 3DS and WiiU.

I don't know about the rest of you but I have been collecting the Disney Infinity figures because I think they look amazing and are very well made.  So I will also be collecting the Amiibos but know that I will get more use out of them because they will work on more games that I will actually want to play.

The first wave of figures include: Animal Crossing citizen, Link, Samus, Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pikachu, Wii Fit Trainer, Yoshi, Star Fox, and Marth.  These figures look amazing and I think their use will be amazing and make the games the work with be even more entertaining.

I'm heading to the store after work and will pre-order the figures I really want and then eventually get the rest.  Have fun everyone and keep gaming!

Quick Review: Shovel Knight (Wii U)

Shovel Knight
Nintendo Wii U
Publisher: Yacht Club Games
Developer: Yacht Club Games
Release: June 26, 2014

Upon first look, Shovel Knight just appears to be just another indie title with a retro 8bit graphic look.  This year alone there have been an insane amount of retro style games released and Shovel Knight at first doesn't seem to be any different.  To its credit however, Shovel Knight proves to be an excellent Action Adventure game akin to many of the NES greats like Faxanadu, Zelda 2, Kirby's Adventure and Battle of Olympus.  Shovel Knight barrows much from these games and runs with it making it a diamond in the rough among a sea of indie shovelware.

GVN Quick Look
First 40 Minutes of Shovel Knight
on the Wii U played by yours truly, Rolento13!!!

So far, Shovel Knight seems to be everything that we expected out of an action platformer and more. The controls feel great and not sluggish at all, classic NES style graphics that remind you of the video games you missed being a kid in the 80's, classic (slightly updated) styled music soundtrack for a truly immersive retro experience, and it forces you to think and hone your various skills you've gained through the years. You're not going to run through levels like a Pro on your first playthrough (I mean, You can try, but have fun dying). Even after this video, it just gets better and better. So, is it worth a buy? You better believe it buddy!!! It's so good that I'm highly tempted to buy it again on my 3DS XL so that I can play it on the go!!!
